Let's Go to Italy - Countries Puzzle in Groups

Mix-and-match puzzle about countries. Students work in small groups. Suits NH6 U3.

This exercise familiarises students with the grammar and style of presentation for New Horizon 6, Unit 3 "Let's Go to Italy." Use it around the middle or second half of the unit, when students have learned the vocabulary and are starting to prepare their presentations/final assessment. Note: the phrases "can [verb]" are underlined and in blue; adjectives are in orange bold font.

Before class:

Print out the attached files and cut them into small slips of paper. Put sets of four slips of paper from three countries (i.e. twelve slips in total) into envelopes.

During class:

Put the class into groups of three or four. Ideally, one or two students in each group use an electronic device (e.g. internet-connected tablet) for research.

Do a brief demonstration in front of the whole class, holding some slips of paper. For example: "'Germany is a nice country,' and 'You can eat tom yum kung.' Is this OK? No. Let's see... 'Germany is a nice country,' and 'You can eat delicious sausages.' That's right!"

Hand out the slips of paper for the teams to mix-and-match correctly. Remind them that each country has exactly four slips of paper; three countries multiplied by four slips each equals twelve slips in total.

Patrol the classroom, answer students' questions, and guide the groups. Help them make a few matches.

After the groups have finished, or seven minutes have passed, do a summary as a whole-class plenary. Invite students to give feedback about common themes and patterns they noticed.
