In groups, students have a whiteboard, marker and an eraser. Make sure students pass the marker after each round.
Start with 'Where is...?' questions first. On the blackboard or in a PowerPoint, show the answer: It's on the desk. Then show some examples of questions to match it e.g. Where is my pencil? / Where is the monkey? etc.
Next, give the class an answer. Students will work together to come up with a question. After a minute or so, they hold up their whiteboards. JTE and ALT give points to each group and tally them on the blackboard. Do not spend too much time with judging.
Here are some examples of answers I used for this round: It's in Shikoku (A familiar location). / It's on the first floor (at school). / In the teacher's room. / At the park.
After a while, have students switch to making 'Where do you...?' questions. Show them an answer with example questions. Answer: At the library.
Questions: Where do you read books? Where do you study with friends? Where do you live?
Show them that this time they have to be aware of using a verb.
Here are more answers: In the classroom. / On the table. / In Australia (ALT's home country). / Inside a box.
This activity is like Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity. Encourage students to be more creative with their answers once they get more comfortable.
