Sunshine 3 Textbook Treasure Hunt (2021 edition)

An updated version of the fantastic textbook treasure hunt by user Keith Miyazaki.

I really liked the idea of the Textbook Treasure Hunt activity posted by user Keith Miyazaki so full credit goes to them.
I made an updated version based on the Sunshine 3 textbook that is in print as of 2021.

This is a review activity for the end of the year, the students are given the handout with 20 sentences taken straight out of the textbook. They have to try to remember which section the sentence is from and search for it in the textbook filling in the blanks with the correct words.

Put the students into groups (mine were groups of 4 to 7 depending on the class arrangement) and give them the handout.

Around half way through I usually stop the class the explain the "secret" of what they are doing and have the JTE translate into Japanese.

Essentially this is a general lesson on good test taking technique.

  • Students should always read all the questions before starting a test or an exam. This enables them to answer the questions they know very well first and not waste tons of time contemplating questions they don't know well, as they would if they simply did them in order.

  • Looking for keywords. If they had read through the questions they should have realized they are randomized, not in chapter order, due to key words that relate the sentences to the chapter they are from (e.g. 1- farmers, 7-cacao, 15-fair-trade, are all from the same chapter). If they went through the questions one by one they would be going back and forth through the text book very innefficiently, instead of finding the questions that are from the same chapter and answering them all at the same time.

At the end of the class I have the groups swap handouts with another group, and then hand them the answer sheet to mark each others work. If there is time, I then read out all the sentences for a little bonus listening practice.

I hope the explanation was clear enough. The actual activity itself is pretty simple, but the practical lessons it teaches are hard to explain simply and are super valuble.
