For this game, we are making variations on the sentence from the New Horizon 2nd year book: It is important to use AI effectively.
First, I divide the class into groups. The more groups, the better. Each group should have a whiteboard and a marker to write their answers.
Write the target sentence on the board. I usually write 'It is important to study English everyday.' Underline 'important' and 'study English everyday.'
The groups will write one sentence using 'It is important to~' and using their own idea. ex. IT is important to exercise; It is important to brush your teeth. After a time limit, we look at all the groups answers. If any students have the same answers or answers that are too similar, they get no points. I also introduce the JTE as a challenger who will also write a sentence. I ask that the JTE tries to make a sentence that they think many of the students will write. If any groups have the same answer as the JTE, -2 points. All original sentences get 2 points.
For the next round, I change the adjective and the groups must write a new sentence. ex 'It is difficult to~'
We go through several different adjectives. If you think the students might not know the word, check before they start writing.
The list of adjectives I use:
-important
-easy
-difficult
-fun
-scary
-dangerous
-cruel
-tiring
-rare
-convenient
-impossible
-interesting
-exciting
-wrong
-amazing
My house rules: students must rotate the whiteboard around the group so everyone has to write; students must read their answers out loud; i give 1min 20sec to write their sentences; I stop giving points if a group keeps using the same answer for every new adjective.
