Activity

Relative Clause Matching Cards

For 3nen classes studying who and that/which relative clauses

  1. First, print the cards and laminate them.
  2. Distriubute the worksheets and the cards. Each student should get one.
  3. Explain how the activity will be done. Each student will be given a card and they have 3 chances to find their partners. There can be multiple sentences that can make sense but make sure to have the master copy of the cards so you know which ones are pairs.
  4. When they partner up with someone, they will combine their sentences by writing it on the worksheet and checking the smiley box if it makes sense, and the sad face box if it doesn't make sense.
  5. If you have extra cards, you can put them on the teacher's table and students can look at them as well to find which card can match with what they are holding.
  6. Once they find the right cards, they can sit down and you can give them stickers for their efforts :D
  7. At the bottom part of the worksheet, students will write their own sentences with who and that/which relative clauses.

Some notes after I did this in my class:
1. Remind them that if they have a card with the first part of the sentence (without the relative pronoun), they should find the second part of the sentence (with the relative pronoun) and vice-versa. If they find someone who has the same part of the sentence, they should not combine their sentences, and should move on to talk to another classmate. No need to write their sentences down.
2. If the sentence still makes sense, even if it's not the originally paired cards, it's fine! :) What's important is they were able to decide that their cards together made sense.

Hi! Thanks for this activity. If possible, could you also upload the Word files so we can edit them?

Also, there's an error on page 5 of the card file. It says "French is a langauge..." instead of "language".

Thanks for pointing it out! I'll upload a PPT file and hopefully you can edit that one.
