Comparatives Card Game

A group game that uses cards to practice er/est/more. This is a pattern practice game that relies on vocabulary that students should already be familiar with.

(Instructions with pictures are included in the PDF.)

Material: 53 noun cards (per group of students)

Divide students into groups (4-6 students per group).
Give each group a set of noun cards. Tell the students to shuffle the cards and deal them out evenly. There will be one remaining card. Put it in the middle of the table as the starter card.

The first student puts a noun card next to it. They make a comparative sentence with ‘than’, linking the two nouns together.
E.g., a car is faster than a bike.

Students can put a card down either before or after the card chain on the table (like dominos).
E.g., a car is faster than a bike.

A bike is smaller than an elephant.

Each student should only use the same comparative/superlative once (other students in the group can also use it one time).

If a student makes a mistake or can't think of a way to link the nouns together, they miss a turn.
The first student to get rid of all their cards wins the game.
When the game is finished, get each group to read out their best sentence and their funniest sentence.

Note: the large cards are used to demonstrate the game for students. I usually challenge the JTE and we play together on the blackboard.
