Activity

Happy New Year!

Lesson plan for the first lesson back after winter break! Covers "What did you do over winter break?" and New Year's Resolutions. Made for SHS, but can easily be tailored for JHS.

Using the presentation and handout ask students to write about what they did over winter break and share their new year's resolution.
There is also room for the ALT to tell the students what they did over winter break, which may be interesting for the students.

Part 1:
Start by asking students "What did you do over winter break?". Get students to share their ideas in pairs.
Then the ALT can talk about what they did over winter break. This can be used as an example for the next activity.
Ask students to write a detailed account about what they did over winter break using the handout.
After writing, answers can be shared verbally in pairs or as a class.

Part 2:
Afterwards introduce new year's resolutions and confirm whether the students are familiar with the concept. (They should be, but may not have heard of the English terminology before.)
The ALT can give some examples of resolutions.
Ask students to write their new year's resolution using the handout.
After writing, answers can be shared verbally in pairs or as a class.

I did this lesson in my class today. I did have to edit a few slides because the phrasing was a little difficult for my students. Overall though it wen really well! My students enjoyed it a lot!

Hi! Thank you for the activity, I used it for every class last new year. Just curious, do you remember where you found the artwork for the Handout? I would like to use something similar for next year.

The artwork is from Irasutoya (or いらすとや in Japanese)!
