NOTE: I think I forgot to mention this when I first posted this. The weather chart was made by an old co-worker. I've been using it for years but I can't edit it because for some reason he liked making things with microsoft publisher.
Draw a few pictures on the board to practice the weather turns. You'll need to teach stormy since its not in the New Crown textbook.
Teach the expressions 'It will be hot and sunny in Tokyo' and a few other variations on that.
Then its a speak and race activity. Each group needs a copy of the weather table.
Start with the first question 'How will the weather be in Toronto on Thursday?'
The students check their table and figure out the answer. One student comes to a teacher with the answer and if its correct give that student the next question.
I usually do this in 4 rounds. After one or two teams have completed the first round I stop. Do an answer check or a little more practice if you think its necessary and then go onto the next round.
I often do this with just speaking and remembering but it would be easy to add a worksheet.
I usually do this with the 'will' future tense but it could be done with simple present or past tense as well.
Students, especially in groups, enjoy this activity. With any race game, the group is only as strong as it's fastest student, so it's very easy for some groups to gain a big advantage over others. When making your own variations I suggest adding a 'blue shell' mechanic, such as, if the fastest group to raise their hand doesn't answer in five seconds, then the next fastest group can answer.
Nice idea. When I do race activities like this it’s more write and race or speak at race. So every team has a chance to answer. I haven’t done it in four rounds in years. Usually just a race to finish 12 questions with stickers rewarded if they do it in the time limit. The teams that finish faster start on other worksheets.
