TLDR Ver: (For a more detailed explanation, please look at NOTES in the PPT file)
- Make groups (6 works best)
- Tell students to do rock, paper, scissors to decide the order (順番)
- Students answer the question and raise their whiteboard up to show you or the JTE
- If they're correct, they can come up to the front and place their team card on a mystery card they want NOTE: If they're struggling, you can assist them until they get it correct)
- Reveal the cards for each team one by one
- The team with the most points wins
Revealing the Card Flow (optional):
Round 1: Reveal Team 1's card first (1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 5 > 6)
Round 2: Reveal Team 2's card first (2 > 3 > 4 > 5 > 6 > 1)
Round 3: Reveal Team 3's card first (3 > 4 > 5 > 6 > 1 > 2)
NOTE: For the last round(s), you can have a student from each team to come to the front and reveal the card. First, do rock, paper, scissors and the loser will have to be the one who reveal their card first. The winner reveals the card last.
Game Flow Example:
Round 1~3: Only put point cards on the blackboard.
Round 4+: Slowly put the special cards on the blackboard. (You can put as many or as few special cards as you want.)
Last Round(s): You can put as many typhoon cards as you want for the last round.
NOTE: The best time to put the cards on the blackboard is when they're answering the questions. If you have another teacher with you, they can help you with this.
Materials to Make:
- [OPTIONAL] Point cards (20 pts x6, 40 pts x6, 60 pts x6, 80 pts, 100 pts x6)
- Typhoon card x6
- Bomb card x6
- Swap card x6
- Steal card x6
Things to Buy:
- Whiteboards x6
- Whiteboard markers x6 (with erasers attached if possible)
- A bag to put all your point and mystery cards in
- Adhesive magnets to stick on your point and mystery cards so you can stick them on the blackboard (They’re called マグネットシートin Japanese)
Other cards I've seen other ALTs use:
x2 Points - Double current points / a point card
Challenge - Team has to do a random challenge to get the points, tongue twister, do star jumps, count from 1-10, etc.
Magic Card - A team gets a random magic spell card that they can use only once (steal card, shield card, etc.)
Roll a Dice - Student gets to roll a dice, and depending on what they roll, they get that many points. E.g. Rolls a 7, = 70 points
NOTE: A fairer way to play is to have the team only lose one point card/half their points instead of losing all their points.
Other things to note:
- You can add all the team’s points together rather than having separate point cards.
- If you don't want to make the team cards, you can: No. 1: Tell the students to take the mystery cards (without looking at it) and place it next to their team number on the scoreboard. No. 2: Have the students write their team number by the card they want to take.
