In preparation for making "present cards," print and distribute this worksheet. It's one A3 page or two A4 pages.
The instructions in Japanese are fairly clear.
① Students write their full names in English three times. (My kids are still struggling with this!)
② Stuents write their birthdays. The instructions say to write the numbers out (i.e., not "17th" but "seventeenth").
③ Students write what they want for their birthday in Japanese in the box. Then, they write it in English on the lines to the left. There are two lines in case it's long, but students can also use the space to practice writing what they want twice if it's short. Encourage students to look up vocabularly in their picture dictionaries for this step.
④ Now, students interview each other. They interview two of their classmates. The boxes on the left are for Japanese, and after they finish the interviews, they can independently work on writing the English on the lines.
They can use this paper as a reference for when they make the present cards later. They can also use it to practice for speaking tests or even just to practice the general outline of the conversation when they exchange present cards.
