Activity

Lunch Rush

Students roleplay as servers in restaurant based dialogue. Involves reading, speaking, memory and movement.

This activity is based around the Here We Go 2 Daily Life Scene 3 レストラン scenario, but I modified the script a little for brevity's sake.
Here the students will roleplay as servers and take orders down from the ALT/JTE.
This is a group based activity with quite a bit of prep work and energy to do, but my students enjoyed doing it.

Materials:
- the print outs attached below
- timer
- pen
- powerpoint to explain activity (if necessary, not attached)

First students get into groups, and decide their participation order.
The game will be played in rounds, in the first round all number 1's will go, in the 2nd round all number 2's will go, and so on. Each round is 3 minutes.
All students will have 3 minutes to take an order from the teacher, go back to their group to complete the order, and check the order with the teacher.
They can complete multiple orders within 3 minutes.
For each correct order they can complete in 3 minutes, they get 1 point/dollar.
Continue until each student has the chance to try taking orders, or until you run out of time.
Winner can be decided by number of points/amount of dollars at the end of the activity.

Print attached:
- modified script
- a list of the meal sets and a record keeping sheet to keep track of which group is completing which order
- cards for the toppings and extra orders
- a pizza base set
- server number cards (up to 6 groups) to quickly let the teacher know which group they came from
- fake money

Notes:
- Some students won't say the dialogue correctly, in that case just have them repeat the script after you.
- A line might form if you can't turn over students quick enough.

I don't have a powerpoint ready for this activity, but everything else I used should be here. After doing the demo for the students, they caught on pretty quickly.
