I wanted to share a fun game I used when I was an elementary school ALT. Although I’m now working with junior high school, this game was a big hit with my elementary students, and I thought some of you might find it useful! It’s perfect for a fun game day and takes about 30-40 minutes to play. It’s based on the "scene-it" style games.
How to Play: 🎮
- Split the class into teams (up to 8 teams).
- Each team gets a whiteboard.
- Students pick one of five videos to watch.
- After watching the video, they answer three simple questions.
- Students pick a "comic book" panel A-H to get a random amount of points. (Keep score at the front board.)
The questions are easy enough for 3rd to 6th graders, and my students always loved it! I often used this game between units or right before a long break to keep the students focused and excited during English class. Recently, I also tried it with my JHS Special Needs class, and it was a big success there too!
Video Clips: 🎥
- Toy Story 4
- Soul
- Elemental
- Monsters Inc.
- Turning Red
Materials Needed: 📚
- TV + Projector
- PowerPoint
- Whiteboards for teams (maximum of 8 teams)
- Blackboard or somewhere for the ALT to keep score
How to Operate the PowerPoint: 🖥️
- Points Slide: After each question, click the letters on the Points slide to give points to the teams that answered correctly.
- Returning to Video Selection: Once all three questions have been answered, click the small category ball to return to the video selection page.

No Google Access: 🚫
I’m really sorry for those who don’t have access to Google Drive! I made you guys a PowerPoint without the videos embedded and will include videos that you can insert yourself! I've left a little note on the slides where the video should be, like "(Toy Story) video here". Let me know if you have any issues!
I hope you and your students have as much fun with it as mine did! Feel free to use or adapt it however you like. In the nearish future, I will start making this game for JHS level with more Japanese-subbed videos rather than Dub!
Happy teaching,
Carpenter Bee
It's something for a fun activity thank you. Instead of Japanese dub I really hope you can just leave it as English because some English Teachers wants students to listen to English dialogues. And we can change the questions about what they were saying. For JHS 3rd graders. But I really love it thank you for your hard work.
For some reason the video don't play on Google Slides, they're just pictures
@mmakuniru Yes it's not meant to be played in Google Slides! You'll have to download it as a PowerPoint file and play it there.
Here's how:
Copy and Paste the Google Drive Link above. Once it opens in Google Slides, go to File, And a dropdown should let you choose "Download" and then > as a PPTX (PowerPoint).
Played with my 2nd grade JHS and they enjoyed it a lot! For my 3rd grade I will probably edit in harder English questions
Hi! I love all your scene it games and so do my students :) I was wondering though if you perchance had any with Halloween movies/cartoons? I'm still learning to use ppt so I'm not confident in replacing the movies that you've embedded in your ppts for my own use. Thank you for all that you do because it really has been a big help.
@AbbyALT I wasn't asked to prep any Halloween lessons for the kids this year so it went on the back-burner. I love that you made one~ It looks great and can't wait to see you make more~
Love all your work. I also think English (maybe with japanese subs) is abit better to give more exposure to natural speech.
