New Horizon 3 Unit 4 Scene 1 Activity

Worksheet for speaking and writing practice.

You can use this worksheet after doing your warm up activity.

Step 1.
1. Review the key sentence - "I know where the local shelter is."
2. Instruct students to interview nine of their classmates by asking the questions on the worksheet. The answer should either be "I know ~" or "I don't know ~". They should write the names of their classmates next to the O and X depending on the answer they get.
3. After the interview, I ask the students the questions on the worksheet and clarify what the words mean in Japanese (examples: landslide, emergency kit, etc.)

Step 2.
1. Using their classmates' answers in the interview, instruct students to write six sentences that follow the pattern of the key sentence.
2. Use this part of the class to clarify any part of the key sentence that needs to be explained further.

Step 3.
1. For this one, students should imagine that they will talk to a foreigner during an earthquake. They should come up with a question that a foreigner would most likely ask during an earthquake. Encourage the students to write an original question and not just copy the questions from the interview. You can give some examples such as, "Where is the nearest station?" or "Where is the nearest convenience store?" or "What is a tsunami?"
2. If you have some time, you can ask some students to share the questions that they come up with.
