Activity

Find the person ~ing NH3U4

Students make quizzes for each other (using reduced relative clauses) to find different people in their textbooks!

Inspired by @NagaokaMike's activity "Find the People"!

OVERVIEW
Students go through their textbooks and make quizzes using "Can you find the person ~ing?" / "Where is the person ~ing?". Then in small groups they race to find the answers!

I based this off of the NH3 textbook!

PREPARATION
Students will all need a copy of the worksheet + their textbooks!

PROCEDURE
1. Use the PowerPoint to explain the activity to the students -- they can search through their textbooks for the answers of the example questions!
2. Give them all a worksheet and get them to create their own questions based off of their textbooks. (emphasize that they shouldn't let other kids see the page number answers!)
3. Once all the students have at least a few questions prepared, you can put them in groups (3+ members) and get them to take turns asking each other their quizzes!
4. If there is time at the end, I like to try and get each group to nominate the most interesting question(s) they had, so that everyone else in the class can give it a shot.

NOTES
- When I used this last year this students got super into it and I think we ended up using the entire class period every time.
- Depending on how competitive they are, it might take a little while for them to make their questions. You can definitely set a time limit if you don't have the whole lesson/they're taking too long!
- The example questions in the PowerPoint and worksheets are based off of the New Horizons 3 (2021) textbook, so they would need to be changed if you use a different textbook!
- I believe basketball actually shows up twice in the textbook, so there are multiple correct answers to that question.
- When I did the activity this year I ended up not even using the PowerPoint and just gave verbal examples and they were able to get it pretty quickly!
