JHS Music Quiz: I, My, Me, Mine

A free day activity based on the Japan Musical Pursuit - but easier

I put together this music quiz for my 1st-year JHS classes who are reviewing "I, My, Me, Mine", and itโ€™s been a hit. The design is similar to the Japan Musical Pursuit game, so if you like that format, this should be right up your alley!

There is a tiny review before the game starts. I show my kids 2 sentences and then have them tell me which of the two is grammatically right. Usually I just have them raise their hands, but if they wanna shout it out that works too haha

Setup

  • Teams: Break the class into teams and give each team a whiteboard.
  • Categories: The game has three: Missing Words, Which One, and Scene It. Each round, a team picks a category and number, and we play a song or video clip for their question.

How It Works

  1. Missing Words: Students listen to a song clip and fill in the blanks with two-three missing words. They can listen multiple times if they need. Great for listening practice!

  2. Which One: Students listen to a song and select the correct phrase from a multiple-choice list. They can listen multiple times if they need.

  3. Scene It: A fun breather! Students watch a 1-2 minute clip from a music video and answer a random question that isnโ€™t tied to grammar. Itโ€™s a break from the detailed listening, which keeps the energy up!

Optional Twist: For Missing Words and Which One, if I thought the kids might recognize the song or artist, I blanked out the album cover so they could try guessing for bonus points. You can completely ignore this~

Mechanics

Click on the album covers to play the song. Use the spacebar or the next button to reveal the answer.

Since the file size is 388 MB with all the videos, I made a version without embedded videos (below). I also included a PDF guide for adding the videos~

Important Notes

  • The songs have all been cleaned to be PG-13 and all swear words were removed; but if you want to swap out for other songs, I found "Mine" by Taylor Swift or "My Way" with Frank Sinatra could fit well too.

Hope this helps bring some fun to your classes, too! ๐Ÿ˜Š

This is neat! too bad i dont do JHS or id give this a shot. One thing id like to say is that for the song "Where ever you are" by 1 ok rock, in the verse ใ„ใคใ‚‚ๅ›ใŒใ„ใ‚‹ใ‹ใ‚‰ใ€‚You have kokoro ๅฟƒ instead of kimiใ€€ๅ›. My Japanese isn't perfect so i could just be making a mistake, if so you can just disregard but thought id bring it up.

Love it, I`ll just include "I, me, mine" from The Beatles.

Did I mention that you are a genius? As always great stuff!

It doesn't allow editing on my side.

@metapod I just noticed! I wonder how that happened cause I just copied the lyrics from Google. I fixed it~~ thanks for pointing it out :)

@Berniey Did you figure it out? I had someone on another post who only opened the link in Google Drive, but they did not actually download the file. If you have downloaded the file and opened in PowerPoint, it should show you a button at the top in a yellow banner that says "Enable Editing". I had a friend test on their end and they had no issues~ I hope this helped.

@All Thanks :) Keep sending song suggestions! Eventually I'd like to do some for Hers/His/Yours

Hi! This sounds amazing, but the google link isn't working at all for me! It says, "file not found". I'd really appreciate it if you could update the link! Thanks for your time!

This game is really creative! I want to add some more listening questions to make the game longer. I'm not sure how to increase the number of questions on the select a category page. Was wondering if you could help? I'm not very familiar with the PPT application

    9. CarpenterBee November 11, 2024

@mkapes16 Sure! Have you already made the listening slides? I will upload a folder with the click-able "numbers" on the categories screen. You are going to insert them on your categories screen. After they are all placed where you like them, right-click on one of the images, and then hit "link". "Place in This Document" > and click on the listening slide you created. individually do all the links for the other number images.

For making 6-10 disappear after you click on them, I would follow this tutorial. I would need a visual to explain it best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAn7CGtS5JY&t=449s

Let me know if you still have questions
