Instructions on slide 1. Print slides 4, 5, for version 1, 10 & 11 for version 2, on separate sheets of paper. Print half as many sheets as students in your class as each student in a pair gets a different sheet.
15 minutes per version. I did these in 2 different lessons. You could do both in one lesson.
It helps if students have something they can use as a "counter". For example, my JTE had animal shaped erasers the students could use. But if nothing is available, using their finger as a guide along the map should be okay.
ACTIVITY
Get students to make pairs.
In each pair, one student gets Side A and the other Side B.
Explain the activity. Apologies for no Japanese version, my Japanese isn't good enough for that yet. Hopefully if needed the JTE/Homeroom teacher can translate.
Complete the example with the JTE/Homeroom teacher. This uses the first versions map.
They Janken to see who asks first.
They ask "Excuse me, where is the ~ ?" and choose one of the places in the grid at the bottom of their page to ask about. The other student will know where this is.
Their partner directs them. There is examples of what to say on the right hand side of their sheet.
The student who asked says "I see. Thank you", the other student replies "You're welcome". They either write or draw the location into the blank space.
They swap roles and repeat until each student in the pair has filled every missing space.
I think this activity got the students talking in English a lot and they seemed to enjoy it.
This was originally inspired by an activity by Yanaa, but I changed it to be something entirely different just using their map for the first version.
EDIT: My JTE likes this activity so much he asked me to make a 3rd version, this has been added to slides 15 & 16
