[This activity is inspired by AsakawaSune's original activity - I added more cards, the original idea cards, and an accompanying worksheet.]
Objective:
Win the point by choosing the best/funniest card to complete the sentence - Cards Against Humanity style game (PG).
Set up:
I'm not going to lie...there are a lot of cards to cut up.
There is 1 file of STARTERS (25 cards), and 2 files of FINISHERS (38 cards).
You will need all 63 cards for each group.
Cut up the cards. If you can print on thick paper, do that, otherwise you can laminate them and cut up after.
If you want to use the worksheet: cut the worksheets in half.
Method:
Put the students into groups of 4 or 5 (4 is better as they will have more cards).
Students deal 4 blue cards each.
Show the PPT to walk the students through how to play. The PPT is animated to make it easy to understand.
- Students play janken to decide the first 'winner'.
- The 'winner' takes 1 black STARTER card and reads it out.
- The other players then choose their best/funniest FINISH card to complete the sentence.
- Each student should read their completed sentence out loud.
- The 'winner' then chooses their favorite FINISH card..
- The student whose FINISH card it is takes the black STARTER card and gains 1 point!
- They are the new 'winner'.
- FINISH cards should go at the bottom of the blue card pile, and they take a new blue card.
- Always have 4 blue cards.
- The new 'winner' takes the next black STARTER card, and they play again.
Student with the most black STARTER cards (points) wins!!
There are also some blank cards. These are original idea cards. If the student wants to play this card, they have to think of their own sentence FINISHER.
(My students got pretty creative with this, ie. 'If I was immortal, I would go to a black hole.' !!)
OPTIONAL EXTRA:
I made a mini worksheet to finish the class, if you have time or your JTE wants some writing practice.
There are 2 questions:
- 'What were your favorite sentences?'
- 'New card ideas?'
Basically a review of the activity and a chance for the students to be creative.
((For formatting, I use: 'Antique Olive Compact' or 'Segoe UI Black' for titles, and 'UD デジタル UK-R' for body text.))
Love it! Really nice cards and super clear explanation. I like EVERYTHING about it and shall be spending the next couple of days laminating and cutting. Thank you very much!
I appreciate your tremendous effort. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Awesome! I made my own version for my school last year after seeing the same activity, lol. The mini worksheet is a great addition!!!
Your efforts are really impressive! I spent a considerable amount of time printing and laminating this past weekend, but the students were livelier than usual 1st period on a Monday morning in winter. Thank you so much!
Love this idea! I just don't have access to a color printer unfortunetly so I will try to figure something out. Awesome activity! ^_^
Thank you so much! The activity was wonderful for my third-year students.
