Ive attached my own ppt as an example, but you would want to use pictures from your own town perferably to really demonstrate how there are english words and letters around the students every day.
I use this activity as a warm up game during the alphabet unit. The kids catch onto how to do it very quickly and get pretty excited to guess the place names. Since they already know uppercase letters, I just write the place name however its written on the actual location, so even if they cant nesessarily "read" it, they can still recognize the word and make the connection.
To do the activity, I start by telling them that I have a challenge, an alphabet challenge, then quickly explain that I will write letters and they need to guess the place name. They'll likely be a little confused at first without a japanese explanation, but after doing the first round, they'll be fine. Write the letters slowly 1 by 1, and give them a chance to think about it before writing the next letter. I let them make guesses between each letter and once its been fully guessed show the photo on the slide so they can make the local connection. And if we manage to get the whole word written and they still havent guessed I try to give them some hints to help. (If they really cant guess it I'll usually ask if they "give up" and if they say yes I'll just show the answer lol.)
I intentionally keep the first slide blank so they wont know whats coming. And I recommend keeping a note with the place names in order so you dont forget.
I made 2 versions of this game to be used at the start of different class periods, but feel free to make as many or few as suits your needs
