I have a sort of odd holiday tradition. Starting around Thanksgiving I always write out what I do and why I do it, usually in the form of random writing on a paper, then I BURN IT as a way to release it in to the world. I thought it would be fun to use this tradition to have my students practice writing "I ~ to ~." but I was given only 15 minutes - and this was the result!
Materials:
- LIGHT colored origami paper
They'll be writing on the color part so it's important that it's light colored!
- Powerpoint w/video
- Suggested: Color pencils
Steps:
Begin by explaining the tradition using the first few slides.
My JTE likes to check comprehesion with examples so we take a minute to have the students discuss what "I learn Japanese to be able to order food." means then one student translates it for the class.
At the On a tree! slide I pass out the origami paper.
With a smaller class or if I have more time I give them two options of colors to pick from, otherwise I give them a random one.
Go through the tutorial
I make one with them, and have the video at 75% or 50% speed pausing when needed.
Turn on the Japanese subtitles!Have students write what they do and why ("I ~ to ~.") on their new tree!
Give them time at the end to decorate the tree however they want.
That's it! You're done! Very quick and simple. It was originally with a snowman (based on another activity I found here) but the students found it too complicated to follow in only a 15 minute lesson. If you have more time, or you want to do this for another holiday, you can change the tree to something else easily! Just swap out the video and tree pictures as needed :)
A tree is a great idea! Some of my students aren't confident in their origami skills (like me...) but the tree might be a good replacement for them! Thanks for the idea and thanks for tagging my lesson! :)
