This is quite a challenging activity. The activity from the textbook seems impossible for the students to do.
What I did.
Explain Step 1 from the textbook. I sort of have a quick review of the graphs and tables from 2nd grade which they have already learned.
Show them the line graph from step 1. Ask them what graph it is. Ask about the title of the graph and the countries involved. Basically some facts about the graph.
Let them know that they will have to write a report about the graph, but first, let them know you will be learning the parts of the reports which are already on their textbook. I let them read every sentence and ask the meaning in Japanese (they talked in pairs to discuss the Japanese meaning). My JTE helps with some English words that they may not be familiar with.
After discussing the parts of the report (the ppt is a little detailed for my students to better understand them)ask them to make pairs and they will need to interview their classmates. I have prepared at least 17 topics for them to ask. they will be making their original bar graph based from the topics they've picked.
After the interview, they will start writing their report. I show them my example and how to actually write it using their own graph from the interview.
