Activity

Music Genres

This activity introduces students to the vast and still ever growing 6,291 music genres of the world. This activity can be used to introduce English language music too. It's overall very fun.

This activity is a two-part exercise (potentially three parts for presentation assembly).

Part One: Music Exploration and Practice (Slides 1–30)

Dialogue Practice:

The worksheet I have includes a simple dialogue between A and B—really simple.
Model this with your teacher and practice saying it with your students. Have them make pairs and practice together.
I can usually get three rounds out of them, but gauge your students’ level.

Exploring Music Genres:

Guide students through some of the more popular genres of music.
This section is only as engaging as the ALT is, so bring your best personality and 元気-ness to it! I usually ask:
Have you ever listened to (genre)?
(Pick a student who raises their hand to give a band or artist example.)
What instruments do you hear? (Use lots of gestures!)

Customizing Songs and Artwork:

The songs I have can easily be swapped for others, as well as their album artwork.
Artwork Note: Look for images that are perfect squares (e.g., 400x400 or 500x500). The bigger the better, as it keeps things uniform when resizing.
Songs Note: ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check with your teachers about your music choices!
The biggest area for error is usually rap and punk, so be mindful of any concerns your teachers might have.
Also, keep clips to 30 seconds.

Group Lyric Fill-in-the-Blank Activity:

Play the song once while students listen and read the lyrics.
Let them discuss in groups, then play the song a second time so they can begin writing.
Give one final chance to talk with group members before a listen-and-check round.
If you swap songs, keep each segment to 30–45 seconds for timing. I usually finish the last song check just as the school bell rings.

Sometimes, there’s just enough time to ask, “How many music genres do you think exist?”
It’s always fun to see their reactions.

Part Two: Genre Research and Presentations (Optional Extension)

If you have consistent classes with your students and want to ramp things up, this part moves into presentation preparation.
(Note: Make sure your school is ICT-equipped, as students will need internet access.)

Introducing EveryNoise.com:

Start with Slide 31. If you left the last class on a cliffhanger, this is a fun way to continue.
Have students dive into everynoise.com to see the amazing list of music genres.
Familiarize yourself with the site beforehand to navigate confidently.
Recommend Google Chrome for its webpage translation feature so students can easily switch to Japanese, making it easier to explore.

Worksheet and ALT Example:

The attached worksheet gives students guidance and includes Japanese hints to ease the load.
Prepare a completed worksheet to show as an example. You can even start the class with a short two-minute presentation on your own genre.

Presentation Prep and Timing:

Set time limits for different sections to guide students effectively.
I had my students make a PowerPoint (or Loilonote) presentation and present it in a third class.
This works well if you have back-to-back lessons with the same students.

Final Notes:

Ultimately, my students enjoyed it and had fun vibing with the music.
This activity is definitely 元気-heavy, so bring lots of energy and let your students vibe with their ALTDJ!

Thank you for this! Could you please provide the google slides or canva link of the presentation, or split it into parts and upload it so each file is less than 40MB?

@Miki248 : I've added the link in the Final Notes section.
