Word of the Year

A fun end-of year (or end-of-school-year) lesson where students can learn some slang through authentic examples, as well as reflect on their year.

Inspired by this post about Kanji of the Year: https://www.altopedia.net/activities/66-my-kanji-of-the-year

In the PowerPoint, I start with some discussion questions about Kanji of the Year (something they may be able to easily understand and relate the concept to), then some questions about Word of the Year.

I chose 3 recent Word of the Year winners and included tiktoks (youtube shorts) to show them in action.

I originally designed this for low-level high schoolers. The activity on the worksheet (and my example in the powerpoint) is quite simple for any level, but the introduction to Word of the Year may need to be adapted to fit the ability of your students.
