DETAILED EXPLANATION:
- Introduce the activity using simple examples like TV/テレビ or radio/ラジオ. It helps if you write TV on the blackboard and ask your JTE what is the katakana word for it. Have your JTE pretend as if he/she doesn`t know and have them ask the students. Point out that TV/テレビ makes a pair and today they will match katakana words with their origin.
- Have the students form groups of 4 and give one envelope of the katakanized English and one envelope of the real English words to each groupGive the groups a certain time limit to match up all the words. I suggest 20-25 minutes.
- Once the time is up, check the answers together with the entire class.
VARIATIONS:
- Instead of the handing out envelopes, hand out a worksheet containing a column of the katakanized words and English words to each group.
- If you teach a smaller class, you can also play a concentration game after you finish the activity, or play a concentration game the next class as a review.
- Feel free to scale down the long list of words and not entire set of 40 or change them to different words.
TIPS/CAUTIONS:
- Ask students to count all the words at the end of the game to make sure none get lost. There should be 80 pieces in total. Before the game starts ask for two students from each group to take up the responsibility of counting and for all the pieces to get back to you.
- Mark envelopes with numbers.
- There should be at least one machine that enlarges A4 size copies at your school. If you are not familiar with it or if you haven`t used it before ask your JTE about it.
