MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Open-sentence structure sentences
- A cup
- Strips of blank paper
DETAILED EXPLANATION:
- This game is best for open-ended sentence structures: Tomorrow I am going to..., The place I want to visit is..., If I am rich, I will...
- First, you must prepare strips of paper with the first half of the sentence structure you want to teach. The objective of the game is to get students and yourself to complete the sentence in a funny and amusing way.
- To begin, give each student a blank piece of paper. Next take a target sentence paper and read it. So for example, the paper may read "When I grow up, I am going to..." Read it aloud and tell the students to complete the sentence anyway they wish. Encourage them to make it funny, and that untrue statements are totally acceptable.
- When students are done, tell them to fold it up and throw them into the cup. Once you have collected all the responses, shake the cup and redistribute the responses to each student. Some students may have their own response, but it is okay.
- Tell the students to read the response in their hands and you decide which on is the funniest or most interesting. Find out who wrote the response and award that person a point.
- When the round is finished, the person to your clockwise position will be the judge for the next round and you have to write a response, too.
VARIATIONS:
- Instead of a cup, I made a crepe shaped container to capture the students' curiosity.
TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:
- The game work best for JHS grade 3 students and up, but some advanced grade 2 classes enjoy this game, too. I only play this game with small classes 4-6 students. However if you teach a big class, you can divide the class into smaller groups.
TIPS/CAUTIONS:
- The first round is usually boring answers as students aren't sure what to do. Therefore during the second round it is very important for you to set the standards of a wacky answer.
- The game is difficult to explain, so just play it and explain it as you go. The game is very intuitive and kids get the hang of it quickly.
