2023 NOTE: I decided to reduce my presence on the site so I've removed most of the variants of my activities. Rather than posting a template or versions for multiple language points I'm just posting a single version. It's not hard to create one's own.
NOTE
I haven't updated or used this activity in awhile. If you are going to use it you should take a good look first for dated cultural references and stuff that doesn't suit the new teacher strategies. If nothing else I hope these older materials will give you some ideas for your own materials.
Also I don't use these types of quiz games anymore if I can avoid it. I find these traditional quiz games even if colorful don't allow for enough participation. I recommend Race and Speak or Write and Race activities more.
This a powerpoint with six slides that can be used for typhoon game type quiz game.
These are games where you have a list of questions, the students make groups, one member stands up.
They listen to the question and raise their hands if they can answer the question. The student who raises his hand the fastest gets the first chance to answer the question. If the answer is okay they pick a square from the grid, for example '2D' and collect points for their team or get a special effect.
The special effects can be decided by individual teachers and ALTs. I often use the following.
Sunny Day...double existing points or get 5 points if they have no points
Typhoon...good bye points...tough luck
Snowy day...good bye all team's points...hahaha
Happy Dance...4 points plus 2 points for all teams. Remember to say 'thank you' everyone.
I use laminated cards with magnets that I put in a grid on the blackboard. I also have a "pirate card" which allows a team to steal half the points of another team.
Cool, I used to have a hi-five card and a dance card for typhoon game. The team wouldn’t get points but for the first they had to hi-five the teacher and for the second the teachers had to dance. Good for a laugh.
