Negative Be Verb/ Do Verb Writing Race

Students differentiate between negated be verbs and do verbs in a writing race

This activity was made for students to practice differentiating between negative sentences that use be verbs and those that use do verbs (am not/ do not).

Six pictures with a sentence being said by someone in the picture, a writing worksheet, and an answer key are included. The 6 sentences are as follows: 1 affirmative be verb sentence, 2 negative be verb sentences, 1 affirmative do verb sentence, 2 negative do verb sentences. I included affirmative sentences so students can grasp the difference between affirmative and negative, too, but depending on the level of your students, it may be best to leave them out/ do them as a review as a class.

The activity:
Place the 6 pictures around the room. I would suggest making doubles if there are a lot of students in the class.
Students, in pairs, will each have their own worksheet they need to fill out. You can give one to the pairs and have one of the pair write sentences 1-3, the other 4-6, if you prefer.
The pairs will go around the room, finding the numbered pictures.
They look at the picture and write the entire sentence, filling in the parenthesis(es).
When they've completed their writing worksheet, they come to the ALT/JTE to have them check it.

Options:
Provide hints of what is possible to go in the parentheses on the board (I usually do this).
As for the check- I tend to be strict with spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. These kind of activities are good for correcting those kind of common mistakes.
You can reward teams for speed/ fewest mistakes/ best effort etc if you do rewards in your classroom.
You can add a speaking component by having the pairs read the sentences when submitting them for the check.
You can easily change this to a strictly reporter activity, either by filling in the parentheses or by having them report the sentence with the parentheses.
If there's a big gap between finished pairs and those still going around, have the finished pairs translate the sentences and get those checked, too.
