Activity

Who can do what?

A short writing activity and guessing game for students to practice writing "I can..." sentences.

This activity is very very simple but all the classes I've done it with have had a lot of fun.

Each student gets a paper and they write down three things they can do. I allow them to use dictionaries/textbooks for vocaubulary but they might be okay depending on the level of your class.

This activity is done individually and as they write, the JTE and ALT walk around and correct the sentences.

Once all students have finished, collect and shuffle the papers.

Choose a paper at random and read the sentences, the students then have to guess which of their classmates it is.

Alternatively, if you want to include reading practice, give out the papers at random and have the students read the sentences and the other classmates guess. (Note that in some classes, particularly lower level ones, this may add a fair bit of time onto the length of the activity)

Note: I always encourage my students to choose really unique things that they can do, that maybe other students don't know about. (We all found out recently that one of my students speaks fluent Russian which was cool!) But as with everything, you know your own class best so please use your own judgement.

Any construcive feedback is welcome and appreciated!

These 'Who is it' quiz games are always fun. If your school allows mingling activities (sadly mine don't yet) a good way to extend this is give the students five minutes to walk around and share their information with as many kids as they can (encouraging reactions) and then collect the profiles and do the quiz game. This adds speaking practice to the activity.

That's a great idea! Thanks for the feedback Robert!
