Activity

"Virtual Life"

practice for "if I were... I would..." and "if I were... I could..."

I created this discussion activity and worksheet to help my JHS third years practice conditionals and to express their own creativity. I created two versions, one with only "would" and one with "would" and "could" and corresponding worksheets so please choose whichever best fits your class needs.

The discussion follows a pattern of:
context set up--> teacher example-->student opinion of example-->student give own opinions

I gave students a chance to talk in groups/pairs (for larger classes) or to just raise their hands and say their ideas for the whole class (for smaller groups). Both ways worked fine in my school.

Then I introduced the worksheet and broke it down by part. I highlighted the difference in prepositions for location ("at" vs. "in" vs. "on"). The first part has the context decided and the second part is much more free.

If students finished ahead of schedule, I allowed them to share their unique ideas and generated discussion around them.

In the files, I also attached a word file for the worksheet if you'd rather change the place names for your own prefecture (I doubt many of you are also in Mie). For my school, students use tablets that can receive and send worksheets easily, but printing them works fine as well. I hope it's useful!
