This is a vocabulary gap activity that uses the main body parts picture on page 125 of Sunshine 3 or could be used with any topic related to going to the doctor to describe pain in a body part. 3rd grade JHS.

Before handing out the worksheet (pdf below), introduce the topic by reviewing the vocabulary and location of body parts in the “Head, shoulders, knees and toes” song. After handing out the worksheet, they already know the locations of 4 body parts. Give 5 mins to try and find as many as they can by themselves, then 2 mins with their neighbor to fill out ones they didn’t know. When monitoring, it’s useful to draw their attention to the arm and leg sections. Common ones students don’t know are; navel (present belly-button too), thigh, calf, shin, throat and sole.

We are over 10 mins into the lesson and ready to do the Please Help Me! Exercise on page 14 and can use the body parts in the “I cut my ~” and “I have a pain in my ~” parts of the exercise. I get them to do this in pairs then we have a random student number lottery to pick a pair to perform their skit.

Time permitting, you can round off the lesson with a vocab review “Tate-Yoko” game. Teacher asks: “Where is your (insert body part)? Quickest hand up student answers; “It’s here!” And points to the body part.

It fills a lesson period.
