Students are given a word search and try to find 5 of each item. I make it a race against me and see how many they can find in the time I finish the puzzle. Usually about 10-12 min.
These items are now in their magical convenience store.
Students count their items and write in the part 1 section. "I have 4 pencils"
When students finish their writing they will then ask their partners "How many pencils do you have?" And go down the list.
When they finish the list I move on to part 2 and tell them they are going shopping. (sorta)
Here is the convo.
A: "How many (erasers) do you have?"
B: "I have (three) (erasers)."
A: "I want to buy (three) (erasers)."
rock paper scissors
and see if you win the three erasers or not.
I tell the students that their convenience store is magical and will always restock so there isn't as much adding and subtracting going on.
I have them switch partners and after three partner conversations, let them stand up and ask other students for about 10min.
Count up at the end and see who has the most breads, teas, waterbottles and so on.
This activity was inspired by the 3 cats activity on the site.
How many BREADS is wrong but otherwise great time killer
