Haunted House - Choose Your Own Adventure

Students try to survive the night in a haunted house by voting as a class to make choices. Can your class make it through until morning?

This is a choose your own adventure story game using a powerpoint. The powerpoint is ready to use, and has 13 endings (4 survivals, 9 deaths). There is also a word document with the story and choices, feel free to adjust the English level to your own classes.

How to play

Show the powerpoint on the board. Tell the students they will be listening to a story and making choices to try and survive the night at a haunted house. You can have the students vote by moving to the corresponding side of the room, pointing, raising hands and so on. The class makes a decision as a whole, so whichever choice has the most votes wins. As the students make choices, click the choice on the powerpoint and move to the matching paragraph in the story document.

Advice

It is quite difficult to survive this game! My students enjoyed playing several times and using what they learned to make better choices. You can also dim the lights and play spooky music for a better atmosphere. Students can get quite excited during this game, so make sure to maintain class control when reading the story extracts (that's where the English learning is!)

None of the monsters in the powerpoint are too scary, but if you are working with very young children it might be a good idea to swap out the gif of the scary lady at the top of the stairs / the ghosts in the woods. All the other monsters are cartoons.

Enjoy the spooky season! >:)

Edit: Reuploaded the powerpoint because of a missing 'return home' button on the vampire death slide.

Thank you! We didn't plan on doing anything else Halloween-y with my JHS 2nd graders yesterday, but the students really wanted something else to do for Halloween and I happened to have this saved on a USB. They talked to the ghost at the end, and it was really funny! They loved it.

I really enjoyed using this with my JHS 3rd years. I highly recommend making them stand up and move around the room to choose! Acting out the parts makes it more interesting, too! Just be careful not to strain your voice if you decide to do it in multiple classes. Great activity!

I have to drop a lotta love for this activity!! I played it with my 1nen JHS students, and they absolutely loved it. They got really into the English and actively listening to the story I was telling them. Also gave me a chance to flex some DM-ing muscles. Thanks for the fantastic Halloween lesson!

I used this with some of my elementary students... I had to stop because it was too scary for some. Xp

Very well done though! I like it! I just have to choose my audience better. XD
