This is a simple English Quiz activity for third year JHS. You can change the questions, but for this specific activity, we used “What is ~ that ~?” lesson.
Prepare character team cards. I used popular characters like Super Mario, Kirby, Pikachu, Anpanman, Link (Zelda), Doraemon as teams.
Also prepare a box filled with point cards/papers. I have 5 kinds of points. Plus points (1pt - 5pts), Minus points (-1pt. to -3pts.), Steal points (Steal 1pt - Steal 3pts), 2 bomb points (the group who picked out this card will reset their score to zero), 2 typhoon points (all groups will reset to zero).
The JET will ask a simple question (e.g. “How are you?”, “What’s your name?”, “What food do you like?”, etc) and the student who can raise their card the fastest can answer the question in 10seconds (if time’s up, others can steal).
If the answer is correct, proceed to the powerpoint question. Give them a time limit. I usually give 20 seconds for first years and 15 seconds for 2nd and 3rd year. If they give the correct answer, they can get a point card from the box.
If they can’t give the correct answer within the time limit, other groups can raise their character cards and steal.
