Turncoat Coded Excel Game

Students answer questions in groups to take a turn at an Othello inspired game. Each piece played turns all surrounding pieces the same color.

This is a coded Excel game! If you want to use it, you will have to have Excel and allow macros.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • White boards, markers, and erasers for each group
  • Copies of a list of questions for each group

DIRECTIONS

  • Divide your class into groups
    • Each group gets one of the four colors. If there are more than four groups, let groups work together as teams under one color.
  • Groups answer questions on their white boards.
  • For each answer, have one student from that group bring their white board and questions list to you.
  • If they are correct, mark that question complete on the list and have them take a turn placing a colored square.

GAME PLAY

  • Click New Game to clear the board.
  • Click a color and then click any white square on the board to place a piece. All adjacent pieces will become that color.
  • Clicking "Clear" is like using white as a color. It will white out all adjacent pieces and can only be played on a white square.
  • Click Edit to turn on editing mode and change the color of single squares.
    • Click the desired color or Clear and then any square.
    • Click Edit again to turn off editing mode.
  • The winner is the team with the most squares in their color when time is up.
  • If you are playing for 40 - 50 minutes, I recommend clearing the board once and playing again. The first time has a learning curve, so the second round will be much more competitive.

TECHNICAL TIPS

  • If you are using an electric blackboard, use the USB (in addition to the HTMI) to enable touch screen! Then the students can place the pieces themselves!
  • If an error message pops up, just click continue. It will still work fine!
