Activity

Disney Directions (NH1 - Let's Talk 3)

Students ask for and give directions around the Disneyland Park

My JTE special requested this activity and brought the students Disney headbands to wear.

[This is an activity to practice asking for and giving directions, based on the New Horizon 1, Let's Talk 3 page.]

Let's go to Disneyland! The students are going on a trip to Disneyland and they want to do all the activities on their To-Do list--go on rides, eat at restaurants, etc. However, they don't know where their destinations are. They have to walk to the area their destination is in, and ask for directions from the entrance. They can then write the location on their list. The area guides can't just point out where it is, they must tell them the directions using the English phrases they learned.

Break the students into 7 groups, moving their desks together, and give each group a set of materials that corresponds to the 7 sections at Disneyland.

They get:
- 1 area sign
- one mini map of their area
- one To-Do list
- one large park map

Students take turns being park guests and area guides.

Guests take their large maps and To-Do lists and walk around to the different areas, asking them where they can find their destination. "I'm looking for Space Mountain."

Guides check their mini maps and say the directions to the guest, starting at the symbol on their mini map. The guest then writes the number / letter on their list and returns to their group to pass to the next student. Guides also now pass the role onto the next student in their group.

** Everyone can see the GREY labels on the map (which they can use as landmarks when giving directions, "It's by the Gift Shop"), but only the mini guide maps have the WHITE labels (the answers).

After groups finish they can come to the ALT with their To-Do list and check their answers from the PPT.

Print out:
- the full park map (A3 size) x7
- mini area maps, (A4 size) x1 of each
- To-Do lists (A4 then cut in half) x one of each x number of classes for them to write on
- signs for their desks (A4) x one of each area

I put the large, color map up on the projector. At the end of the class, I had some volunteers come up and give me directions in front of the class.

It's really nice! Only as a suggestion, you can use a Tokyo Disneyland map instead of American (or wherever) since kids can relate more I guess. Although is great to talk about the place where dreams come true and there's a Millenium Falcon to visit, probably the students can relate more with the japanese one. Nice job!

A late comment. It's a great activity. But to anyone who wants to use this, please be aware of the mistake on Group 4: Main Street USA's map. The labels are correctly placed, just the map itself is wrong.

I've gone through and edited the files so hopefully there aren't any mistakes. It should be easy enough to edit if you see anything else before prepping for class.
