Camping Trip! (should)

What should you bring to the camping trip?

This activity is intended for the application of the auxiliary verb "should"; specifically, for page 109 of the One World 1 textbook. In the moment that this activity has been posted on the site, there is no tag for the auxiliary verb "should".

The students are going to go on a venturesome trip to the countryside - rather fabulous, isn't it? In groups, they must decide on what items they should bring, and justify their ideas. At the end, within each group, they must decide on which three items to bring on their crusade into the wilderness.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Present the PowerPoint presentation and go through the examples together.

  • The explanation to the activity starts on Slide 7. You can hand out the worksheets (attached Word Document) to the students and make camping groups of four students per group. I usually call these groups their respective "tent buddies".

  • Step 1: working individually, have each student come up with three items to bring and a brief reason for each.

  • Step 2: have the students share their ideas to their groups and discuss which items will have more value on their expedition. Make sure that they use the expression "We should bring...".

  • Step 3: have the groups decide on which three items to bring.

  • Step 4: have the students write their results.

TIPS:

  • Some camping vocabulary will be required, so do distribute dictionaries to the students.

  • These kinds of activities can provide a good opportunity to share some personal experiences regarding the subject. I usually start the class by showing pictures/experiences/stories of my own camping escapades from my time growing up in South Africa.
