Summer Festivals & State Fairs Presentation/Warmup

A powerpoint with speaking exercises about summer festivals and America's monstrosity state fair foods.

Just a lighthearted summer-themed warmup I've been doing in my last few classes before summer vacation. I start off by asking the students about what they usually eat at summer festivals, then introduce the State Fair as America's (sort of) parallel event. The real meat of it is introducing crazy state fair foods, like fried Oreos and donut burgers. The conversation exercises here are designed to go with New Horizon 2 Unit 2 ("when I x, I y" and "because"), but I've also been using it at elementary school by changing them to "I like..." for 5th grade and "You can eat..." for 6th. I'm a pretty slow presenter so running the whole thing with the conversation exercises usually takes about 10-15 minutes!

Of course the really elaborate state fairs are longer than just a few days, but it always got a big reaction when I show how after the fair ends, all the carnival equipment gets lugged off to the next place. At first glance, most of the classes also thought the Oreos were anko, lol. For the second years, I also paired this with a "When you hear summer, what do you think?" (夏といえば?) conversation excercise that transitioned into more information about summer in America and a presentation about summer camp (and a Campfire Song Song singalong challenge), but most of that section is actual pictures of me at summer camp.

When I saw this topic I knew it was from a Minnesotan, and it was just confirmed with the Sweet Martha's cookie bucket haha. Thank you from one Minnesotan to another, looking forward to homeroom tomorrow so I can talk about the Fair!

@hall1428 I'm actually a Michigander (who's heard the legends of the Sweet Martha's cookie bucket), but from one Midwesterner to another, I'm happy to hear it!! :)
