Hello all!
My JTE requested for me to create a short presentation on emojis and acronyms commonly used in English. Being the chronically online person that I am, I jumped on the opportunity. Our school uses the New Horizons textbook, and I found that the examples used in the textbook are really outdated... I haven't seen a :-) emoji used since the AOL days, and not once have I seen someone use "CU" for "see you".
There's a section that introduces common acronyms and their meanings, with a funny little soundbite for each definition. For ASAP, I plan to tell them that it comes from morse code. For "ttfn", I plan on telling them that it was popularized by Tigger (because my students love Winnie the Pooh) even before the internet became a thing!
I feel like this could be a great introduction to an online space, because if students were to go to English websites and apps such as YouTube, Twitter, or TikTok, they will more than likely see these acronyms and emojis used. I feel like it would make interacting with English speakers through text a lot easier. Of course, I wouldn't encourage students to write "btw" or "omg" on their essays!
I also drew my interpretations of a few emojis, and I plan to use them for sticker designs later down the road when I have the time. Feel free to use them yourself!
Have fun, guys! :D
Adorable!
Doing an observation lesson early next month and this is literally EXACTLY what I was looking for! I'm going to add it to the lesson plan. The art is so awesome! Thanks for making!
