WHAT'S NEW
13/10/2023: SA1 – A Message to Myself in the Future: A teacher from another school asked me to make a new version where students can brainstorm and also leave nice notes on their friend's worksheet. I also updated the PPT to explain this. I removed the "Love, ____" so students can choose their own closing greeting (終わりのあいさつ). Feel free to use this version or the simpler version (v3).
17/10/2023: SA1 – A Message to Myself in the Future: Added the "New Words" to practice before they start writing in the PPT file.
16/11/2023: SA2&3 - Uploaded PPT files to google drive for those who are interested in the videos.
You can download them here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1CCisNyKONjTGi2mbMx23QSuGLQjZGFCW?usp=sharing
7/12/2023: SA2 - My Hero: Combined the Easy&Challenge Ver into one worksheet. Added more slides in PPT.
SA3 – My Favourite Event This Year - Added more slides in PPT to explain WS better.
9/1/2024: SA2 – Discover Japan - Added extra slides to PPT to explain activity
19/1/2024: SA2 – Research and Presentation - Instead of using Survey Monkey to gather the data, a JTE from another school wanted to physically count the votes, so I had to make a new worksheet. Groups will spend the first 20 mins making their Qs and the remaining 30 mins, the group leader will ask the question one by one. The other students will vote by putting their hands up. The 2nd lesson is where they have to report about their findings.
14/2/2024: SA3 - Let's have a Mini Debate: I made a new version with the help of my JTE (please download Ver. B). You can still use the one I made.
POWERPOINT
How I normally structure my PPT:
- Introduce activity and today's goal
- Ask CCQ questions
- Show 2 examples (one easy and one that's challenging for the high level students)
- Explain how the writing structure works (intro, content, conclusion, etc).
- Explain worksheet (with screenshots attached)
WORKSHEETS
What I normally include in my worksheets:
- “Tool Box +”. I often feel that the toolbox provided in the textbook is not enough and sometimes doesn’t have phrases that the students want to use. I try to think of useful phrases and also sentences that students frequently ask me to translate.
- Translations of the examples that I showed earlier in the PPT.
LESSON FLOW EXAMPLE
1. JTE introduces writing task to the students.
2. Go through new words and text. (Sometimes JTEs will skip this and do it in another lesson)
3. ALT shows PPT, ask CCQs (Concept Checking Questions) throughout the PPT <- Very important!
4. Show examples
5. Explain the writing structure (intro, content, conclusion)
6. Explain worksheet
7. Ask students if they have any questions before they start
8. JTE & ALT walks around to assist students
9. OPTIONAL: If time allows it and it looks like everyone has finished, ask for some volunteers to read what they wrote.
Some JTEs may ask the students to do exercises in their English Time workbooks.
Here’s the list of all the “Stage Activity” activities that I have done.
❌ = Haven't made one (yet)
🟡 = Not so satisfied with the current version, may make a new one in the future.
✅ = Pretty satisfied with the current version
1st Grade (一年生):
✅ Stage Activity 1 – “All about Me” Poster
Note: This is actually one of favourite worksheets I’ve made so far. The kids really enjoyed it. The flow is fairly easy to follow. Please replace the info about me with yours. (Haruto Suzuki is not a real student btw.)
✅ Stage Activity 2 – My Hero
Note: This is a cute activity where the student gets to write about their hero. I made two versions (Easy & Challenging) and printed them double-sided. The students get to choose which version they want to do.
✅ Stage Activity 3 – My Favourite Event This Year
Note: N/A
2nd Grade (二年生):
✅ Stage Activity 1 – A Message to Myself in the Future
Note: One of my favourite activities to do!
✅ Stage Activity 2 – Research and Presentation
Note: N/A
✅ Stage Activity 3 – My Favourite Place in Our Town
In the PPT, I showed an example of my favourite place in Melbourne. After that, I gave them examples of places around Iwaki (where I’m based).
3rd Grade (三年生):
✅ Stage Activity 1 – My Activity Report
Note: N/A
✅ Stage Activity 2 – Discover Japan
Note: This is an activity where they get to make their own travel brochure.
✅ Stage Activity 3 – Let’s Have a Mini Debate
Note: Fun but quite challenging for the students. I made this theme based on Phoenix Wright. You can either have all the groups do one topic or 3 topics (6 groups, 3 topics). For example, Group A & B does Topic #1, Group C & D does Topic #2, etc. Of course, the class can choose the topic(s). I normally don't encourage students to rely on translating apps like Deepl, but since debating is already quite difficult, it's fine for this activity.
TIPS:
- I try to avoid the use of deepl and google translate in class as they won’t be able to produce language organically. Encourage them to use their dictionaries and have them raise their hands if they need any assistance.
- I enjoy playing (SFW) music on my portable speaker while they’re writing, you get to see them feel more relaxed. On a plus note, the kids and the teacher get to enjoy listening to some English music! Be careful not to play the music too loud.
NOTE:
- My worksheets work for me because it suits my teaching style. Feel free to change things around to better suit you. Though in saying that, I still would like to hear some feedback on my worksheets, PPT, etc. There's always room for improvement.
- Some worksheets may include places from where I'm from or things about me
