Flexible Speaking Activity for a target question and answer sentence. Find the unicorn (odd person out) by asking all your classmates and figuring out who has a different answer than others.

The worksheet and answer cards are specifically for One World JHS 1年 Lesson 8 Part 1 pp.102-103 "Going to verbs".
But this speaking and listening activity can be used for other grammar lessons. Just change the question and answers.

Worksheet

(1) Unicorn Game: Speaking and Listening Activity (20 minutes)
a. Each student will be given a piece of paper with a sentence: “I am going to __.”
b. There are 10 different sentences. For each sentence, there will be 2 or 3 students with the same sentence. But there is 1 sentence with only 1 student. (This is the “unicorn” / unique sentence.)
c. Students to read and practice speaking their sentence. (1 minute) (Or teacher goes through all the sentences in the worksheet, so whole class can practice all sentences.)
d. The whole class will practice speaking the question: “What are you going to do this weekend?” (1 minute)
e. When the teacher says Go, everyone will find a classmate and ask the question, “What are you going to do this weekend?”. The partner will answer with his/her sentence, “I am going to _
_.” Then, exchange roles of who will ask and who will answer. (15 minutes)
f. Students must write their classmates’ names on the Worksheet.
g. The goal of the game is to find the Unicorn – the classmate who will do his/her activity alone.
h. The first student to write the unicorn’s name wins.
*If time is up and noone has found the unicorn, class works together by eliminating other phrases (Which sentences have pairs or trios?)

(2) Writing Activity: (20 minutes)
a. At the back of the worksheet, students to write sentences about their classmates’ answers in the Unicorn game, using “going to”.
Examples:
Sana is going to visit the museum.
Yukina and Mizuki are going to play soccer.
Kan, Yuya and Shin are going to wash their bikes.
b. They also have to write 1 original sentence using “going to”. It should be different from the examples given in the game or in the textbook.
c. Students can help each other in writing and thinking.
d. If there is time, teacher can ask for volunteers to read their original sentence to the class.

Notes:
This was for a class of 24 students. Edit the answer phrases depending on how many pairs and trios you want, and how many students you have. As long as there is a unicorn phrase (only 1 person).

I also drew/printed a cute unicorn on the envelope where I had the answer cards stored. Just so students can visualize better.
