Aggretsuko English Song Challenge (Google Slides)

A fun, challenging game to use as a warm-up or half/full-lesson. A good way to introduce students to English songs and also for them to analyse the lyrics.

Hi all,

I created this game based on the anime Aggretsuko. I’ve played this game with my 二年生 JHS kids and they really enjoyed it but it was difficult and that’s why I limited it to one point for at least three words correctly written. It's not perfect and a work in progress but the kids found it to be exciting and wanted to know the names of the songs after class.

First, introduce the game and storyline of the anime to the students by playing the video on slide 2; for those who don’t know about this anime, this will give you an idea of it too.

Then, proceed to explain the game rules, use the ‘listen carefully’ slide while explaining the rules.

Game Rules
- Divide the class into groups (ideally four members), each group has a white board and a marker.
- Ask students to play janken to decide the writing order but emphasise that this is a group challenge.
- Start by question 1 - I usually play the recording thrice, with ten seconds in between each play and after the third time, I set the timer for 15 seconds.
- Students then reveal their answers.
- If a group gets at least three words correct, they can get a point. If they get the full sentence correct, they can get two points.
Repeat until all the questions are answered.

The questions are labelled from 1-14, click on the questions to go to their respective slide, then click the green arrow to reveal the correct answer and to play the song. Click on the yellow (home button) to return to slide 4 and to move on to the next question.

  2. John Lennon - Imagine
  3. Ronan Keating - When You Say Nothing At All
  4. Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are
  5. Fools Garden - Lemon Tree
  6. Tones and I - Dance Monkey
  7. Pharrel Williams - Happy
  8. One Direction - Nights
  9. Sean Kingston - Beautiful

  11. Carly Rae Jepson - Call Me Maybe
  12. Rick Astley - Never gonna give you up

I chose these songs as they are quite catchy and some of the students have heard them before.

Enjoy and have fun. Happy holidays to all!

Sounds fun, I especially like the Aggretsuko theming! What are the success and rage buttons for?

Thank you! I randomly used them throughout the lesson and once finished, I played the rage. Just to add to the drama! :)

Hi quick question, did the songs play for you guys? My only option seemed to be playing the youtube video.

Hi! I'm not sure what the problem is but I recommend trying it with the link attached. I'm going to try to fix the issue. :)

I tried to access the link but it won't let me, for both my work email and personal email. Is there any other way to access it?

I have updated the link. I think the issue was that I was using my organisations Google account and it seemed to only allow others within our organisation.
