Activity

Passive Sentences - Activity Stations

JHS 2年 One World Textbook Lesson 7-1,2 pp.78-81 (Object + was + verb in past participle tense + by + Subject)

Print the Worksheet for students.
Print the Workstation materials (2 copies). 1 copy - keep in its sentence form. the 2nd copy, cut the 3 parts (subject, verb in past tense, object).
Place the 12 workstation sentences in random parts of the classroom, spaced out from each other. (each station to have a complete sentence, and the same sentence in cut out parts.)

First, JTE to discuss the grammar lesson and how to change sentences from active voice to passive voice, using page 144 of Textbook: Verb Conjugations.
JTE to give 3 examples so that the class can also answer/change the sentence together.

  1. There will be 12 workstations around the class room.
  2. The whole class will be divided into pairs or trios.
  3. Each student will be given a worksheet, and choose any of the workstations around the classroom.
  4. When teacher says GO, students to write on their worksheet the sentence from their workstation. The sentences are in active voice. (write on left column of worksheet)
  5. They will work together and understand the sentence. (The words in the sentence have picture clues, if needed.)
  6. Then they will think of how to change the sentence into passive voice. They will write the passive voice sentence in their worksheet, on the Right Column.

The emphasis is to switch the order of the words in the sentence:
Active Voice = Subject + Verb in past tense + Object
Passive Voice = Object + “was” Verb in past participle tense + “by” Subject
*Students can use page 144 of textbook to choose the verb in passive voice.

  1. Once finished with 1 station, the pair goes back to the JTE or ALT (either) to have their sentence checked.
  2. If correct, they can choose a different workstation, and repeat the process.
  3. The first pair to finish all stations wins.

Optional:
10. The pairs will write an original sentence at the bottom of their worksheet: first, in active voice, then change it to passive voice.
Optional:
The teacher can go over all the sentences together, and ask students which examples are better using active voice, and which examples are better using passive voice.

Thank you for making this . It was hard at first but before using the worksheets i made them to review past tense and past participles of the words the verbs they have to use. at first they struggled but finally they were able to enjoy the activities. they even competed to finish to number 12. It was fun. I printed and laminated cards to be used in work stations. then after the group finishing copying the sentense they can go hunt another card around the class as me and JTE walk around the groups checking their sentenses as we corrected their mistakes.

Glad this helped! And yes, that's the point of the stations, is to kind of make it competitive and make them forget that they're studying or practicing something hard. By the end of it, whether they finish first or not, they'll have practiced the lesson skill 12 times. :)
I do this activity station style of task for other lessons too, for practice of a particular skill.
