Will and Won't Writing

A write and race activity

Update April 2021: I've added a new version along with a powerpoint and a jankan game focusing on weather. I'll detail how to use it all next week when I have time. You might be able to figure it out though.

Step One: Weather Peek-A-Boo
I wouldn't make groups or anything. Just go through this quickly as a class.

Introduce the weather terms and the phrase 'How will the weather be on Saturday?'

Click through the slide introducing the 6 weather term and the question. Then click again to quickly see the picture of the weather. You can back click and do it again if the students didn't see it the first time. Then forward click after they guessed it and show the answer.

Continue for the next three slides doing this. Make sure you get them to practice saying the questions and answers.

STEP TWO: Weather Jankan Race. In a pair students play Jankan, the winner asks 'How will the weather be on...?' and the other answers. The winner then crosses out that day on their sheet. Play for about a minute. Whoever gets closest to the goal wins. There are two rounds.

Step Three: What will you do if...
I'd do this is a pair practice. On the first slide it introduces the phrase 'If it's rainy?' And it introduces two answers 'I will...' and 'I won't'. Show and practice those two answers and then show the two questions and the responses. Have the students practice in pairs giving there own answers to the two questions. There are four slides.

Step Four: Write and Race
This is a group activity. The students take turns bringing their answer to a teacher and getting the next key words.
The slide show shows the demonstration. The teacher gives the first key words and the slide show shows what to write. Then demonstrate coming to the teacher and getting the next keywords and continuing.

After this I'd hand out the worksheets and start the activity. Continue until one or two groups completes it. I'll generally have stickers for groups that complete it or complete a certain amount depending on time.

Step Five: Talk Time
Go back to pairs and hold one minute conversation that starts with the question on the board but students should be free to continue however they like. The green circle is a timer. You click on it to set a one minute timer. If you click on the image that appears afterwards the timer reappears.

Step Six: Writing Time
Write a short essay based on the question. The slideshow shows an example answer. After showing it I suggest clicking one more time so it vanishes and the students have to think of their own answer.

NOTE: The first slide gives a choice between using 'If' or not using 'If'. These buttons are hyperlinks that will lead to the rest of the activity.

NOTE: the original worksheet without the powerpoint is still here.
