What's This? 3-Hint Quiz: Animals (ES 3年生)

A poster of 30 animals (most animals are in the Let's Try Textbook 3年生, have the same Japanese word, or are commonly known English animal words). Students give hints on Size, Color, and First Letter.

Pre-Activity: English Words Review (5 minutes)
Review English words for colors and letters through flashcards. (or other ways)

Optional: Textbook Quizzes (5 minutes)
Do the Textbook activities related to Animals in Let's Try 3年生 Textbook Unit 8 (Guess the Animal based on the Kanji symbols, and based on the footprints, Hint Quiz)

Distribute the Animal Poster, 1 per student.

Activity 1: Animal Flashcards: (5 minutes)
Teach/review animal names. Students to write the katakana names on their posters to help them remember how to pronounce the English names of animals.

Activity 2: Big or Small. (5 minutes)
Teach the English words big and small. Teach exaggerated gestures for big and small (stand up and stretch arms for big, crouch down for small). Show the animal flashcards, 1 by 1, repeating the animal name, and students to do the action and say big / small. This helps practice the 2 adjectives, helps remember animal names, and agree as a class if an animal is big or small. (Ex. wild boar = big. If they disagree, ex. turtle = some turtles are big, some small, you can say that in real life there are different sizes, but for today's activity let's agree that it is small.)

Activity 3: 3-Hint Quiz (25 minutes)

2 minutes for Teacher to demonstrate/give 3 examples of a hint quiz, using the Animal Poster.
10 minutes to make their own Hint Quiz
10 minutes to take turns with partners in giving/answering Hint Quizzes (for large classes. small classes can immediately give hints for whole class)
3 minutes for volunteers to give the Hint Quiz in front of the whole class

Sample Script: (Write the speech prompts on the board)
Quiz-master: What's this?
Students: Hint, please!
Quiz-master: Hint 1: big, Hint 2: black and white, Hint 3: P.
Students: Panda!
Quiz-master: Yes, that's right! / No, sorry.

Hint Quiz Template / Mind-Mapping Sheet: Give 1 copy to each student.
This helps students organize their thoughts and make sure they have 3 hints to let their classmates correctly guess the answer.
In one of my classes, the JTE asked students to write down memos and then give the hints orally.
In my other class, after writing down memos, we made a nice Hint Quiz paper (fold the paper into 4, then draw each hint and the answer on each 1/4 section, and reveal the hints one by one) to help present the quiz more nicely, as they gave the hints orally. (Sorry, I didn't take a picture, a bit hard to explain, but we cut 1 of the fold lines , so that we can fold the hints and reveal it one by one. Imagine how they make and fold the nori sheet for a square shaped onigiri.) (It also helped those who haven't mastered English lessons still participate through the visuals and answer in the quiz.)
(If pressed for time, I recommend students write on the template as memos, but give the hint quiz orally. But if there is time, they can make the drawing nice, and color it too, or also if you want the students to have quiet time/more peaceful activity (sometimes, in big classes, these moments are needed to.)

Files include:
1. Animal Flashcards

  1. Animal Poster
  2. with Big/Small katakana guide on top.
  3. Colors are easily seen
  4. with English word labels so students can copy/identify the First Letter of each word.
(We made the hints uniform in this way, based on past lessons for 3年生:colors and alphabet, since it would be hard for them to give other kinds of adjectives in English. If you have advanced students, they can give other kinds of hints.)

  5. Hint Quiz Template
(Print page 2 only. The 1st page is for Food 3-Hint Quiz.)

Note:
Butterfly and Bee both have the same clues: small, yellow, B...you can tell students to add the other colors in the picture, as a 4th hint. or add other words they know (maybe flower or garden for butterfly, and honey for bee? or color blue, in addition to yellow/black.)
You can also choose to change the animal instead, but these were the ones I chose.
