Frustrated by the textbooks English often sounding fake or forced, I started writing my own newspaper to print out and put on my ALT board to give my students some natural sounding English reading practice. I started it in January, it is going well and I thought I could share the template so you can make your own for your students. As for topics I write about, whatever I feel like that is age appropriate. For example, movie reviews, book reviews, video game reviews, opinion pieces, recommendations, cafe or restaurant or travel pieces,... and also a complete nonsense made-up-by-me astrology section (just for fun).
I write in simple English (only using the grammar from the textbooks: in my case junior high school but it would be good for high school too I think) but I don't worry about the vocabulary. The students can check words with their chromebooks or dictionaries. I recommend it for the 3rd graders, but also tell the 2nd and 1st graders about it too as most of the grammar is super simple.
I have stretched out the text boxes so you can see how much space is for each "article" and I just adjust them (up or down) so I can fit some pictures in. You can have recurring sections for some of your passions or like me can just switch them up so that you can write about whatever you like each month. I find it difficult to keep the articles within the space I have, but I think that it is good to keep them short enough for the students to get through.
I print it out and stick 10-20 on my ALT board and reprint as necessary. Make sure you tell your students about it when you have classes with them. Some of my JTEs have really got behind it and ask me to print one out for each 3rd grader to hand them out in class.
I hope you and your students find this useful! Have a great February people! It's nearly spring vacation! Peace out!
