Description
"Students work in teams to capture territory by filling it in with their team's color. This activity can be used to practice various different grammar points. Students should complete writing or speaking challenges to advance." (NagaokaMike)
The PowerPoint Mike made was amazing. All my students loved it and were constantly wanting to play it. However, some issues arose due to the dreadfully old and restrictive JTE laptops. For the original PowerPoint to work, Macros had to be enabled, which always made it a gamble whether it would work on that JTE's laptop or not.
Another issue was that the games could not be saved to a database without paying to attach one, leading to having to create a special copy of the PowerPoint for each class.
To address these issues, I created a website version of the game where you can:
1. save the game
2. use the projector mode to make it easier to see
3. access the game on any device (No more fidgeting with dinosaur laptops and their Macro permissions)
4. use a tablet to play the game as well! (It mostly works. Definitely need to improve it though)
Procedure
- Make 2-8 groups.
- Give the students a writing challenge or speaking challenge.
- Students who complete the challenge fill in a territory with their team's color.
- The team with the most territories at the end is the winner.
Personal Additions
- A challenge mode where students can attack each others territory. You can make the rules around how this would work. I found it's best to change depending on skill level.
- Only 1 team can start in each region so that students don't crowd each other at the beginning of the game.
- Students are not allowed to start on a port city.
Feedback
I would love some feedback on areas I can improve! If you think of anything please leave a comment or start a thread in the forums https://github.com/timchapin96/teach_tokyo/discussions
Acknowledgments
NagaokaMike, you are an absolute beast for taking the time to have coded this in VisualBasic. Thank you for inspiring me to make this and introducing me to a whole new way to make materials for my students.
This is amazing!! Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. I just tested it on my JTE's Chromebook and it works perfectly!
Nice. I like the game, but I had a question about the port cities... how do they work? They are able to attack/move ports that they are immediately attached to?
Also when choosing colors, do they have to choose a territory that's next to what they currently control?
@VinShida Yes! The port cities connect to wherever the trails goes. So if a team owns Hokkaido, they can chose to jump over to 7 or 4. Also yes, aside from port cities they are only allowed to conquer adjacent territories.
ALSO sorry! I just realized that the confirmation e-mails were not sending our correctly. I fixed the issue. If you made an account but did not receive the instructions you can click login and there will be "Didn't receive confirmation instructions?" at the bottom.
