This is a simple group game that adds a new dynamic to a review quiz. It's based off the classic UK show Golden Balls, but I made it One Piece/ Pirate themed for fun!
Need:
- Slides (or questions prepared).
- A way for students to write and hold up (e.g whiteboards).
- 4 cards (2 x Share and 2 x Steal cards- I recommend writing 'Share' and 'Steal' on card so the back looks the same)
- I made 2 pirate hats for the volunteers to wear; some students loved them, others didn't.
.....
The slides explain how it works, but I also like to write it on the blackboard for ease.
Point system
Share + Share = both teams 2 bonus points.
Share + Steal = The team who chose steal gets 5 bonus points.
Steal + Steal = Both teams gets 0 bonus points.
Activity:
Put students into groups (I usually have 6 groups of 6) and give them something to write on. They want to be the fastest team and hold up their board.
Show the slides and explain how the game works.
Ask them a question, each team can get 1 point for the correct answer, but remember which teams were the fastest 2.
1 volunteer from the fastest teams comes to the front and are each given 2 cards (1x share and 1x steal).
On the count of three they must show the card they have picked to the class. Add or take away points as necessary!
Watch the chaos and betray ensue!
...........
This is such a great activity because even the fastest/ smarter teams can lose in the end because they just try to steal points. I found it gives the students who are not as confident a chance if they take their time!
After a couple of rounds I up the points, or make the Steal + Steal = -4 points to make it more interesting.
