Materials Needed

  • IWantToBe handout. To prepare the worksheet, you'll need to copy and paste the pictures in the worksheet into the appropriate blanks.

Detailed Explanation

  • Explain the key question 'What do you want to be?' and how to answer 'I want to be...'.
  • Let the students practice the English. Repeat in groups/pairs/as a class a few times.
  • Using flashcards, give some examples of jobs (or use Eigo Noto p62-63). Let the students practice any words they don't know.
  • Hand out 5 cards to each student and demonstrate how to play. First students should janken to see who gets to ask the key question. The loser must answer and let the winner then pick any card.
  • After 5-10 minutes of game play, have the students add up the totals on their cards.
  • The winner is the student with the most points.

Variations

  • There are negative points on the cards so sometimes I vary it and let the students with the least points become the winner.
  • You can use the joker cards as a free card that you can assign a point to at the end or say say the winners are those with/without the joker card.

Teaching Suggestions

  • Make sure the students are not using Japanese. If they do, penalise them by taking away one card.
