End-of-Year 6th Grade Q&A Review PPT Game

A competitive game that reviews the English covered in the 5th and 6th grades, and you can use to converse with students by asking follow-up questions related to the answers they give.

Use a big screen monitor. Make teams. You could have the girls vs. the boys, or the left side versus right side of the class, or each row can be a team or lunch groups could be the teams. Determine the order in which the groups will take turns choosing a cover card and answering the question behind the cover card. Before starting the game, review the 28 words and phrases on the cover cards of this game grid. There is no advantage in going first or earlier. Just make sure to finish the game with each team having taken the same number of turns.

When it’s a team’s turn, a member of that team stands up and chooses a cover card by reading the word or phrase on it. The ALT clicks on that cover card which reveals a question. Then the rest of the class asks that question to the student standing up who answers it. If necessary, teammates and teachers may help the student answer correctly. Teachers may share their own answer as a model or write hints on the board. Then click on the question to reveal the number of points awarded to that student’s team. There’s no need to be strict and withhold points for mistakes during this review game. Be sure to model correct answers for hard questions. For each non-yes/no, ask the question again and allow any student with a different answer to answer aloud to get half the number points for their team. If it’s an 80-point question, then they get 40 points.

The homeroom teacher keeps score with a separate laptop on the podium desk in the front center of the classroom. In the attached Excel Simple Scoreboard, enter the points in the cells below the team name and it will keep a running score for each team. This saves time since keeping trace and adding the point manually on the blackboard takes more time. Within teams, rotate who will pick and answer the question each time it’s their turn so all students participate evenly. Keep the pace of the game quick so you can ask follow-up questions to the some students’ answers. At the end of playing, praise the students who did well and share comments about what you observed during the game. If you would like to go over any of the questions, click on the “review” button which displays all of the questions.
