You will need:
The Go Fish Instructions PowerPoint.
To print, laminate and cut up enough Go Fish cards for your class. It's 1 set for each group. Each set has 30 cards. I put my students in groups of 4 and had them start with 4 cards each. Make sure you print double-sided.
The cards use the four questions from the textbook and 11 others that are level appropriate, with vocabulary they should know.
Set up:
Show the PowerPoint and follow the instrctions.
Put students into groups of 4, and have them deal themselves 4 cards each.
Objective:
Students have to get matching pairs of cards. The winner is the student with the most pairs at the end of the game.
Method:
Show the PowerPoint and follow the instructions. Students don't know Go Fish, so it can be difficult to explain to them. I made this PPT with animations to simulate playing the game. As you go through, students will understand the rules and get excited to play!
At any point in the game, if a student ends up with no cards, they can pick up from the pile.
As they play, students may need help with pronunciation.
Make sure they say "Go Fish!" when they don't have the card!
Also make sure they are saying one of the following when they do have the card, it's part of the Tool Box vocabulary on p.31: “Sure / No problem / OK / All right!”
I played this game for 30 minutes, but you can run this activity for as long as you like.
I have also included a practice worksheet which I use after playing the game if there is time. It's just 'fill in the blanks' and a 'write your own' activity.
