JHS New Crown P. 107 Directions Activity

An activity made for 1st year students. This should allow for a small talk activity.

First I would like to thank Emilyinsado for the map. I changed the objects completely but I appreciate the map background.
Please visit her activity (https://www.altopedia.net/activities/2690-how-can-i-get-to-new-crown-1-directions) for a detailed map and instructions.

This is based on an activity I did with the First Year Students in my class last year. My JTE came up with most of it, so I am helping a relatively new JTE with an activity that should take most of the lesson time. We had a different map last year, but the process was the same.
For this, I scanned Hana from the book and added a tourist lady. There are three sheets:
A) A completed map with all the locations (Map A),

B) A map with some locations missing (Map B),

C) A third map with alternate locations to map B missing (Map C).

First, the JTE can have the students read p. 107, and they can take turns in pairs being Hana and the man (10 - 15 minutes).
Then, as they finish, alternate between one row having Map B and one row having Map C.

On the board, write the names of each location. You can either do them one at a time (For example, Number 1's location can be the school. So write the school down on the board, and then after they switch partners, do number two and so on. Feel free to write them all down, however, but it might allow the students to cheat if they want).

The students will then Janken with the partners next to them, and the loser can be either Hana or the tourist. They will then ask for directions.
Preferably, they will say:
"Excuse me. How can I get to [location]?"
Then, as Hana, they can say, "Go straight..." and so on.

There are twelve locations. After partnering up 3 or 4 times, the students can be encouraged to find the answers with a partner of their choosing. That way they can hurry closer to the end of the lesson to see if they can get all of the answers. If you do this, you don't have to go in a row with your choices for locations. Such as, if you say the school first (number 1), you could say the Lake next (number 9).

I only changed Emilyinsado's map and activity so that the students will have to ask directions and have to interact to tell their friends where to go. This can be a whole lesson and they can enjoy speaking English. I realize I didn't number the boxes, but when you print the first copy, feel free to add the numbers any way you see fit. The first page is the answer sheet and can be shared with the students at the end to see if they completed it all.

I am attaching the pub file for editing, as well as a PDF file for printing. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you!
